Why do some of today's wonderfully weird animals look like they were designed by a committee?

Committee Animal offers a twist on evolution: what if the quirkiest animals - like platypuses, giraffes, and armadillos - were the result of an overworked design committee battling red tape, tight deadlines, and supply chain shortages?
